Chennai Super Kings have added former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel and ex-India pacer Mohit Sharma to their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, with Morkel appointed assistant coach and Mohit taking charge of the bowling department, IANS reported. The appointments, announced on Tuesday, are part of a major restructuring at the five-time champions following three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, with new head coach Zaheer Khan overseeing the overhaul ahead of the November 15 retention deadline. DevDiscourse, carrying the same announcement, said Gareth Batty has also been appointed an assistant coach, and that the trio will work under Zaheer after Stephen Fleming's departure — Fleming has been appointed England's men's Test head coach, it said.

The franchise also thanked outgoing support staff Michael Hussey, Eric Simons, Rajiv Kumar, Tommy Simsek and Greg King for their contributions, IANS reported in a follow-up on the coaches' reactions. James Foster will continue as fielding coach, while Sridharan Sriram retains his role as assistant coach, it said. KhelNow's full staff list for IPL 2027 names Zaheer Khan as head coach, Mohit Sharma as bowling coach, Morkel and Batty as assistant coaches, Sriram as assistant bowling coach and Foster as fielding coach.

Both returning coaches bring deep familiarity with the Super Kings. Morkel represented CSK from 2008 to 2013, scoring 827 runs and claiming 76 wickets in 78 matches and playing a key role in the title-winning campaigns of 2010 and 2011, and he recently took over as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in South Africa's SA20, succeeding Fleming, IANS and the Daily Jagran reported. Mohit began his IPL career with CSK in 2013, played for the franchise across four seasons between 2013 and 2019 with 58 wickets in 48 matches, won the Purple Cap in 2014 with 23 wickets and was part of the 2014 Champions League T20-winning squad; across 120 IPL appearances he claimed 134 wickets, represented India in 34 internationals, and retired from all forms of cricket in December 2025, the reports said. Batty, a former England spinner, previously coached Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles, KhelNow reported.

Mohit said returning felt like coming home. "It is an absolute pleasure to return to the franchise I once represented, and it feels like coming back home. I started my IPL career with CSK and it acted as the catalyst that propelled me into the national circuit. I have some wonderful memories with the Super Kings, especially winning the Purple Cap award and the 2014 CLT20 title. I look forward to sharing my inputs and work alongside Head Coach Zaheer Khan," he said, according to IANS. CSK are rebuilding after a forgettable IPL 2026 in which the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side finished third from bottom with six wins in 14 games, one coaching report noted.
