Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is weakening over land after completing its crossing of the south Andhra Pradesh coast close to Ongole between 3:30 and 5:30 am IST on Tuesday, November 3 — the crossing Awaaz Punjab reported earlier this morning. In its latest update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the storm is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm, with winds of 80–90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph, by noon on November 3, and further into a deep depression, with winds of 55–65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph, by midnight. The system remains under continuous surveillance by the Doppler weather radars at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam, the IMD said.

No casualties have been reported so far, Daily Jagran's live coverage said, as administration teams and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force personnel stayed deployed across the affected coastal districts through the morning.

Morning impact: fallen trees, flooded roads, relief camps

In Bapatla district, heavy rain waterlogged roads and NDRF personnel were deployed to clear a tree that had fallen near Suryalanka Road, news agency ANI reported. In Ongole, several trees were uprooted and temporary structures collapsed under heavy rain and gales gusting to 120 kmph during the crossing, PTI visuals showed, and uprooted trees were also reported from the Chirala area. Roads were inundated in Vijayawada, where PTI video showed buses and people wading through floodwater.

In NTR district, several families were shifted to relief camps as a precaution against possible landslides in the Mogalrajapuram area. District Collector Lakshmisha said there were no major issues in the district so far due to the storm, and urged people to remain indoors given the forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall, Daily Jagran reported.

Warnings still in force

The IMD's fishermen warnings remain in force: fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until the morning of November 4 for the southwest Bay of Bengal and the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts, and until the afternoon of November 4 for the west-central Bay of Bengal and the south Odisha coast, according to the IMD warning of 6:00 am on November 3 summarised by Fisheries India. Andhra Pradesh IMD chief K. Nagaratna said offshore and onshore operations remain totally suspended until the warnings are reviewed. A storm surge of 1–1.5 metres above the astronomical tide was expected to inundate low-lying areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh through Tuesday morning, peaking over Bapatla and the Krishna and Prakasam districts before gradually decreasing.

What is solid

  • The IMD says Murasu will weaken to a cyclonic storm (80–90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph) by noon on November 3 and to a deep depression (55–65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph) by midnight, moving north-northwest under Doppler radar surveillance at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam.
  • No casualties had been reported as of Tuesday morning; NDRF teams were clearing fallen trees in waterlogged Bapatla and families had been moved to relief camps in NTR district as a landslide precaution.

What is only claimed

  • A single live-blog line put total evacuations in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha at over 2 lakh people. That figure conflicts with the roughly 30,000-person evacuation target for the Andhra coast reported by Reuters and published by Awaaz Punjab on November 2, and no second source reviewed in this run confirmed the higher figure — so it is not used as a confirmed total here.

What happens next

Through Tuesday, district administrations are expected to complete damage assessment and power restoration as the weakening system carries heavy rain inland, while the IMD's sea warnings run until November 4. Murasu is the second storm to hit this coast in about a week, after Cyclone Arnab made landfall in Andhra Pradesh last Wednesday and killed at least six people, Reuters reported — which is why officials said the absence of reported casualties this time, after evacuations and closures, is the morning's most important fact so far.
