The Delhi Government has placed its draft E-Rickshaw Policy in the public domain for one month, inviting suggestions and feedback from stakeholders before finalising the regulatory framework, ANI reported on October 22. The government is considering a cap of 2.5 lakh e-rickshaws in Delhi — yaani 250,000 vehicles.

Under the proposal, only eligible vehicles would operate on city roads, with mandatory compliance certification, fitness requirements, valid licensing and vehicle identification. The framework will also address overloading and compliance with prescribed passenger capacity, fitness and safety standards, and the government will examine routes and fares after reviewing feedback, the release said. After finalisation, implementation is proposed to begin within 90 days.

Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the objective is to ensure e-rickshaws operate systematically, provide reliable last-mile connectivity and do not contribute to traffic congestion, adding that vehicles built using unsafe 'jugaad' techniques will not be permitted to operate.

Under the draft Delhi E-Rickshaw (Registration and Operation) Scheme, 2026 reported by Mirror Now, every e-rickshaw would need a digital compliance certificate valid for two years and linked to a single authorised driver holding a valid licence and a public service vehicle badge. The scheme proposes a four-passenger limit, a maximum speed of 25 kmph and motor power restricted to 2,000 watts, with ownership capped at five vehicles for an individual and 100 for larger entities.
