India and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen their comprehensive economic and strategic partnership, with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal holding high-level meetings in Brussels with three European Commission directors-general, an official statement said on Monday. IANS reported that the talks covered trade facilitation, market access, supply chain resilience and preparations for implementing the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA).

In his meeting with Ditte Juul Jorgensen, Director-General for Trade and Economic Security (DG TRADE), both sides discussed measures to facilitate two-way trade, improve market access, strengthen supply chain resilience and create new opportunities for businesses in India and the European Union, according to the Commerce Ministry. They reaffirmed their commitment to a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial agreement and agreed to maintain close engagement to address the remaining procedural and implementation-related issues.
Agrawal's meeting with Koen Doens, Director-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), covered India-EU development cooperation and strategic partnerships, including sustainable development, clean energy and green technologies. His talks with Gerassimos Thomas, Director-General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD), focused on customs cooperation, trade facilitation and preparations for the implementation of the India-EU FTA, the ministry said.
Why this round matters
The Brussels meetings mark a shift from negotiation to implementation. ANI reporting carried last week said negotiations on the agreement were concluded at the political level on January 27, 2026, and that both sides are working towards a signing in Brussels around December 17 or 18, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit, with the European Commission proposing a fast-track approval process. Officials have cautioned that the schedule remains tentative until formally announced. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's tour of Germany and the Netherlands from October 22 to 27, where he highlighted the agreement's potential to expand market access and strengthen supply chains, preceded Agrawal's visit.

What happens next is procedural but decisive: the remaining implementation issues Agrawal's team is working through in Brussels, the EU's internal approval process, and formal confirmation of the December signing schedule. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when the signing date is officially announced.
