India's automobile sector witnessed mixed demand trends during the first 14 days of the festive season, with the two-wheeler segment outperforming passenger vehicles despite a high base, according to a report by Jefferies cited by The Hindu BusinessLine on October 26.

Two-wheeler registrations rose 16 per cent year-on-year in the first 14 days, while passenger vehicle registrations declined 6 per cent, the report said. "Auto registration data for the first 14 days of the festive season shows a big divergence between 2Ws and PVs," Jefferies said, in the BusinessLine report.

Demand for passenger vehicles moderated in the second week after registrations recorded a healthy 7 per cent year-on-year growth in the first seven days. In the first half of FY27 (April-September), passenger vehicle registrations and wholesales grew 28-29 per cent year-on-year, while two-wheeler registrations grew 22 per cent and wholesales rose 17 per cent, the report said.

A second summary of the same Jefferies data reported truck registrations up 76 per cent year-on-year and tractor registrations up 21 per cent in the festive start, while noting the truck figure was heavily skewed by a low base the previous year. The split matters for dealers and manufacturers heading into the Dhanteras and Diwali peak, when festive demand is usually at its strongest.
