Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday announced that Opposition parties will take out a 'Chalo Dilli' march on November 1, walking from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction through Ajmeri Gate to Ramlila Maidan. Delhi Police sources, however, said no permission has been sought for a march from Connaught Place, setting up a possible standoff on the eve of the INDIA bloc's big Delhi rally.

Gandhi shared the route and timing in a post on X, writing: "See you tomorrow, let's walk together! Connaught Place Minto Road Junction-Ajmeri Gate-Ramlila Maidan. 1 November, 12 p.m." The march is to culminate at Ramlila Maidan, where the INDIA bloc will hold a rally against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties allege irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and are demanding Kumar's resignation - allegations the Election Commission and the government have disputed in the ongoing public debate over the revision exercise.

This is a new turn in a build-up Awaaz Punjab has been tracking: the bloc has been mobilising for the November 1 rally for days, and Delhi Police had earlier cleared the Ramlila Maidan rally itself with strict conditions. The march from Connaught Place is a separate element, and police sources say it has not been applied for. The sources pointed out that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are in force across the New Delhi area, including near the Election Commission's office, and that Jantar Mantar has been de-notified as a protest site. MPs and political leaders, the sources said, can travel in private vehicles to the Constitution Club, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence or other locations.

Police said elaborate security arrangements are being put in place at Ramlila Maidan for Sunday's rally, and traffic restrictions will remain in force across several parts of Delhi from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 1. The Congress is projecting the rally as a major show of strength by the INDIA bloc, built around its allegation of electoral manipulation through the SIR exercise.

The ruling side pushed back before the march began. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju challenged the Congress on X ahead of the rally, posing questions about past election results, the appointment of Election Commissioners and the legality of Special Intensive Revisions of voter rolls.
