The approval is part of a wider central scheme to add 10,000 new undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats across the country over five years at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore. Nadda said the Himachal Pradesh government submitted its proposal on June 23, and he discussed the matter with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at the AIIMS Bilaspur convocation on October 6 before the Centre sanctioned all 320 seats.

The minister said the additional seats would strengthen specialised services including surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and oncology, and give medical graduates more chances to do postgraduate training inside the state. He urged the state government to complete all administrative and regulatory formalities without delay so the seats are created in a time-bound manner, and also flagged delays in other centrally supported projects in the state.
