India opened the defence of their Men's Asian Champions Trophy title with a thumping 13-0 win over Bangladesh at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Tuesday evening.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted the first penalty corner within two minutes, and local favourite Mandeep Singh doubled the lead soon after before completing his brace in the 10th minute. Shilanand Lakra made it 4-0 in the 15th minute, Abhishek scored in the 18th and Nilakanta Sharma in the 26th, as India ran away with the first half, Khelnow and SportsNewz reported.

The goals continued after the break. Dilpreet Singh and vice-captain Hardik Singh each scored twice, Harmanpreet added his second, Jugraj Singh also found the net, and Mandeep completed his hat-trick in the second half. The tournament match report lists India's scorers as Mandeep (3), Harmanpreet (2), Dilpreet (2), Hardik (2), Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta and Jugraj.

India's finishing was ruthless: the hosts put 18 shots on target and scored from 13 of them, SportsNewz reported.

India are the two-time defending champions and are chasing a record-extending sixth title, having won the tournament in 2011, 2016, 2018 (shared with Pakistan), 2023 and 2024. Bangladesh came into the six-team event as a late replacement, and India played without veteran Manpreet Singh, who was ruled out with a calf injury picked up in training, SportsNewz reported.

In Tuesday's other matches at the same venue, Malaysia beat China 5-4 and Japan beat South Korea 3-2, according to the tournament match records. India next play China on Thursday, 29 October, in the round-robin stage.
