Record sales, squeezed margins
The company recorded its highest-ever quarterly total sales of 2,19,072 units, up 15 per cent from 1,90,921 units in Q2 FY26. It said domestic volumes grew 19 per cent both year-on-year and sequentially, rural penetration reached an all-time high of 26.6 per cent, CNG vehicles accounted for a record 19.1 per cent of volumes, and exports grew 4 per cent year-on-year and 38 per cent sequentially despite geopolitical challenges.

Profit was hit because expenses rose faster than revenue. Total consolidated expenses rose 24 per cent to Rs 19,302.18 crore, led by the cost of materials consumed, which surged 29 per cent to Rs 15,730.91 crore from Rs 12,183.17 crore a year earlier. Standalone EBITDA slipped 20 per cent to Rs 1,912 crore and the standalone margin contracted to 9.47 per cent from 13.97 per cent.
"Q2 FY27 was a milestone quarter for HMIL, marked by record volumes and quarterly revenue exceeding Rs 20,000 crore for the first time since our inception. However, elevated commodity costs weighed on the quarter's profitability," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarun Garg said. He said cost headwinds would continue to challenge profitability, but an improved business outlook, prudent pricing and cost control gave the company confidence for a healthy margin trajectory in the second half, and that it may announce another price hike before its yearly January increase.
For the first half of FY27, consolidated revenue reached Rs 37,030.69 crore, up 9 per cent, while consolidated net profit declined 29 per cent to Rs 2,084.79 crore. Shares of the company were broadly flat in Mumbai trade on Wednesday after the results.
