India's industrial production growth moderated to 6.7 per cent year-on-year in September 2026, official data released on Wednesday showed, as a slower expansion in manufacturing and a contraction in mining pulled the headline number down from August.

The quick estimate of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 124.3 in September, against 116.5 in September 2025, according to the official release cited by IANS. The August quick estimate was 8.0 per cent under the new IIP series, which came into effect on April 1 with 2022-23 as its base year.

Manufacturing, the largest component of the index, grew 7.6 per cent in September, easing from 8.6 per cent in August. Electricity and gas supply was the strongest performer, rising 11.2 per cent, while mining and quarrying output contracted 6.2 per cent, with its index falling to 90.4.
Within manufacturing, 17 of the 23 industry groups recorded positive growth over September 2025. The top contributors were the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, up 19.0 per cent; electrical equipment, up 33.9 per cent; and rubber and plastic products, up 19.9 per cent, IANS reported, citing the official data.
Item groups that contributed significantly included auto components, spares and accessories, passenger cars and commercial vehicles, along with switchgear and circuit-protection equipment, UPS and solid-state drives, and optical-fibre connectors, according to the official release.
The IIP is one of the earliest official reads on factory, mining and utility activity and feeds economists' estimates of near-term GDP growth. A softer September print, led by weaker mining and slower capital-linked manufacturing, will be watched for signs of whether the slowdown is a one-month pause or the start of a cooler industrial phase.
