The quick estimate of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 124.3 in September, against 116.5 in September 2025, IANS reported, citing the official release. The IIP is published under a new series with base year 2022-23, which came into effect from April 1.

Manufacturing, the largest part of the index, expanded 7.6 per cent in September, easing from 8.6 per cent in August. Electricity and gas supply rose 11.2 per cent. Mining was the weak spot, with output reported down 6.2 per cent year-on-year.

Vehicles and electrical equipment led manufacturing

Within manufacturing, 17 of the 23 industry groups recorded positive growth in September over September 2025, IANS reported. The top contributors were manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (up 19.0 per cent), manufacture of electrical equipment (up 33.9 per cent) and manufacture of rubber and plastics products (up 19.9 per cent).

For the April-September period as a whole, industrial output was up 6.8 per cent, faster than the 4.4 per cent rise recorded a year earlier — yaani, factories produced about 6.8 per cent more than in the same six months last year despite the September slowdown.

The IIP is one of the key monthly indicators economists use to gauge near-term economic growth, and the September reading will feed into estimates for the broader economy.
