New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch the navigation satellite NVS-03 on board a GSLV Mk II rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, on October 30, ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan indicated on Thursday, October 22.

NVS-03 is the third satellite of the second-generation NVS series and is meant to strengthen NavIC, India's own regional satellite navigation system. NavIC has been working below its optimal level because of atomic clock failures on several first-generation satellites, and a minimum of four fully working satellites is needed for the system to provide positioning and navigation services.

The stakes are high because NavIC is currently running with limited redundancy. In a written reply to Parliament in July, the government said only three satellites — IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I and NVS-01 — were providing positioning, navigation and timing services, The Hindu BusinessLine reported. Four operational satellites are needed for basic positioning, so a successful NVS-03 mission would restore that minimum threshold.

The newer NVS satellites also bring additional capabilities, including signals in the L1 band, which can improve compatibility with navigation receivers, BusinessLine noted. NVS-04 and NVS-05 are the other planned replacements over the coming 15 to 18 months. The GSLV Mk II, which uses an indigenous cryogenic upper stage, most recently launched the EOS-05 earth observation satellite on September 4, 2026. Key facts — NVS-03 / NavIC

Launch: October 30, 2026, GSLV Mk II, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, as indicated by ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan on October 22. Mission: third second-generation NVS satellite for NavIC. Why it matters: only 3 satellites (IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I, NVS-01) currently provide NavIC positioning services; 4 are needed for basic positioning.
