Jaishankar also held talks with his counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov and said the visit had charted a “pathway” for the future of bilateral relations, The Hindu reported. “Our talks have outlined the way forward for our relationship. We have agreed to deepen political consultations, exchange visits, strengthen economic activities, build connectivity and promote people-to-people ties,” Jaishankar said in his media remarks after the meeting.

“We have a common interest in genuinely promoting peace, progress and prosperity. And threats like terrorism, conflict and instability are our common enemies,” Jaishankar said, according to The Hindu. He also extended India's support to the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process, welcoming the initialling of a peace agreement by the two countries' leaders last August and saying disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Bayramov said the two countries had “different views on various issues” but described the discussion as “very long, positive and fruitful”, The Hindu reported. He highlighted Indian investment in Azerbaijan's energy sector, expanding air links with India and the growing presence of the Indian community, especially students, in his country, and said he believed relations were on the way to developing to a higher level.

The visit is the first bilateral visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister in eight years — Sushma Swaraj visited Azerbaijan in April 2018 for a Non-Aligned Movement ministerial meeting — and comes more than a year after relations soured, when Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry condemned India's Operation Sindoor strikes against Pakistan on May 7, 2025, The Hindu reported. Jaishankar's Baku visit had been announced by the Ministry of External Affairs a day earlier; Friday's meetings were its substantive outcome.
