New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday urged the United Nations to show leadership rather than remain a spectator to global crises, and said terrorism's use as an instrument of statecraft is simply unacceptable, PTI reported from the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan in Delhi, held on the occasion of UN Day.

"The UN must show leadership, not be a spectator to global crises," Jaishankar said, arguing that the case for reformed multilateralism was growing stronger by the day and that large parts of the world could not be excluded from decision-making, according to the reports.

Describing terrorism as a deadly threat to peace, he said: "Its usage as an instrument of statecraft is simply unacceptable. It can never be justified, it can never be rationalized." He called on the world to come together with stronger resolve to counter terrorism in all its forms, and said some countries continued to let political calculations take precedence over the fight against terrorism, PTI reported.

Jaishankar also said war anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere, warning that the two major conflicts underway — in Ukraine and West Asia — impose costs on the whole world, and that India was expressing a global sentiment in favour of dialogue, the reports said.

He described the Global South as facing a "4F crisis" of finance, fuel, food and fertiliser, urged steps to de-risk the international economy, and said market distortions through constriction and choke points only add to suffering, adding that a genuine dialogue on the issue was overdue. He also stressed inclusive, human-centric governance of artificial intelligence, the reports said.
