New Delhi: Students of Jamia Millia Islamia have called off their 18-day hunger strike and protest after the university administration accepted their demands and set a firm timeline to restore the students' union, ANI reported. In an order dated October 29, the university said the approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union Constitution shall be completed by May 15, 2027.

The order, issued by Registrar Prof. Mahtab Alam Rizvi after the competent authority considered a request letter dated October 29 from the students on hunger strike and their delegates, also directs that all ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, rustication, suspensions and campus ban orders issued in connection with participation in the protest shall be revoked, ANI reported. Elections are to be held within six weeks of the start of the next academic session — approximately within six weeks from July 16, 2027 — in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, according to the order.

The settlement is a major new development in a dispute this site has followed since October 21: an earlier university order on October 26 promising elections 15 days after the constitution's approval was rejected by the protesting students as ambiguous, and they had vowed to continue the agitation. Maktoob Media reported that Jamia NSUI leader Ebin Basil, a third-year law student, ended his indefinite hunger strike on its 18th day after the administration accepted the students' demands, and that IUML Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran, who mediated talks between the students and the authorities, was present when the decision was announced.

Careers360 reported that the university had earlier moved classes online during the agitation and extended online classes until November 24, with practical and viva examinations for the odd semester to be held online. It also reported that, under the latest order, campus bans linked to the protest will be revoked by the administration.

Reacting to the settlement, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal hailed the protesting students and said the agitation should serve as a lesson for those trying to suppress the voice of the youth, ANI reported. His remarks are a political reaction to the settlement; the university has not, in the reports cited here, commented beyond its October 29 order. The next test is whether the draft constitution is shared and approved on the timeline the order sets.
