The committee will consider the circumstances leading to the dissolution of JMISU in 2006, various rulings of competent courts in relation to the union, and the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee (2007). The draft will be prepared in furtherance of Article 23(J) and (K) of the Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988, according to the release, Careers360 reported.

Talks after the hunger strike

The decision followed a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif, attended by Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, members of the high-level committee constituted on October 18, deans of faculties, the Dean of Students' Welfare, the Controller of Examinations, the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Chief Proctor, hostel provosts and other senior officials, the release said.

The seven-member high-level committee formed on October 18 reached out to the protesting students on October 19 and visited the protest site. Student representatives attended a two-hour meeting on October 20 at the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and a further meeting that evening at the Dean of Students' Welfare office to formalise the minutes — which, the university said, the students did not agree to sign, ANI reported.

Students have been protesting on campus, with some on an indefinite hunger strike, demanding restoration of the students' union and the announcement of union elections. The union was dissolved in 2006 and no university-wide union elections have been held since. Students have alleged that security personnel forcibly removed hunger strikers from the campus in the early hours of October 17 — an allegation the administration has disputed in earlier statements — and have demanded that disciplinary action against protesters be withdrawn.
