New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to hold students' union elections following days of protests demanding restoration of the elected body, a student group has claimed, but the protesting students rejected the administration's order as ambiguous and vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are addressed through clear, written commitments, ANI reported.

According to the student organisation's statement, Registrar Prof Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi arrived on campus at around 4:30 am on Monday to hold talks with the protesting students, shared the official order and urged them to call off the agitation, ANI reported. The university's order, dated October 26, states that the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union elections will be held 15 days after the approval of the students' union constitution, and the order also revokes suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest and announces a committee to inquire into the actions of security staff during the agitation, according to the report carried by ANI.

The Jammu and Kashmir Student Association said in its statement on Monday that the notice failed to provide a clear and unambiguous announcement on restoring the students' union, ANI reported. The students questioned the absence of a definite timeline for approval of the constitution and for the elections, and said the order does not address their demand for the Proctor's resignation, according to the report. ANI said it reached out to the university's press department but had received no response by the time of filing.

The standoff has run since October 12, when students began a hunger strike demanding restoration of the union, which was dissolved in 2006, Maktoob Media reported. On Saturday, Registrar Rizvi had said students refused to relent despite being assured that union elections would be held after the students' committee submitted the draft constitution, IANS reported.
