According to the official announcement issued ahead of the event, the Sammelan brings together over 9,000 participants from India and abroad and marks the culmination of the year-long celebrations commemorating 75 years of the Chinmaya Mission, the global spiritual movement founded by Swami Chinmayananda in 1951 to make the wisdom of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita accessible to all.
Addressing the Sammelan, Modi cited the Vedic mantra 'Vayam Rashtra Jagruyam Purohitaah', saying it calls upon people to work towards making the nation aware and advanced. 'Swami Chinmayananda Ji lived his entire life guided by this very mantra. The dedication with which he spoke on spiritual subjects, he spoke with the same eagerness and clarity on national matters, because our nation is the birthplace of our culture,' he said, according to ANI.
The Prime Minister said instilling self-respect for India among its people was central to Swami Chinmayananda's mission. 'This nation is the foundation of our existence. Swami Ji always taught us to connect our spiritual progress with personal advancement, and to make personal advancement a medium for the nation's progress,' he said, recalling that Swami Chinmayananda started the Gita Jnana Yajna to take the knowledge of the Upanishads, Vedanta and the scriptures to the general public.
Modi described the Chinmaya Mission as more than an institution, calling it a 'Chinmaya thought' rooted in the vision of a spiritual sage. 'With your good wishes, today I have got the opportunity to be a part of the Amrit Mahotsav of the Chinmaya Mission. This is a completely different spiritual experience,' he told the gathering of mission members, devotees and seekers from across the country and abroad.
The three-day Global Sammelan runs October 23–25 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with over 9,000 participants from India and abroad. It closes a year of celebrations for 75 years of the Chinmaya Mission, founded in 1951.
The official announcement said the year-long celebrations began last year with the Prime Minister releasing a Tamil versification of the Bhagavad Gita, produced by the Chinmaya Mission with music by Ilaiyaraaja, at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu. Initiatives during the year included the Chinmaya Gita Samarpanam, under which over 1 lakh people across the world chanted the 15th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita together online, and the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra, in which 15 young members of Chinmaya Yuva Kendra travelled over 40,000 km across the country.
