President Droupadi Murmu's scheduled two-day visit to Odisha has been postponed because of the cyclone forecast for the state's coast. The revised schedule was conveyed through a letter issued by the Tour Section of the President's Secretariat on Saturday. Under the earlier itinerary, President Murmu was scheduled to visit Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district, her hometown, travelling via Kalaikunda in West Bengal. Officials stressed that the programme has been rescheduled, not cancelled. An official at the Chief Secretary's office said the tour was postponed as a precautionary measure in view of adverse weather forecasts and to ensure the safety of the President and all involved in the visit, The CSR Journal reported. The Mayurbhanj district administration likewise clarified that the President's programme had not been cancelled, but rescheduled to November 4 and 5.

The decision follows the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast for a developing storm over the Bay of Bengal. In its Saturday bulletin, the IMD said the well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal had intensified into a depression, centred at 5:30 p.m. on October 24 about 820 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam. The system is very likely to intensify into a deep depression on October 25 and into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26, strengthen further into a very severe cyclonic storm, and cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph, Sambad English reported from the IMD bulletin. If it reaches cyclone strength, the storm will be named Arnab.

The detailed itinerary of the President's rescheduled visit is yet to be published, the report said.
