Revenue from transaction charges, the largest contributor, rose 9 per cent to Rs 3,035 crore from Rs 2,789 crore a year ago, driven by higher volumes in the cash market and equity options segments. The cash market recorded an average daily traded volume of Rs 1,18,377 crore, up 24 per cent year-on-year, while equity options premium turnover rose 3 per cent to Rs 47,977 crore.

Why profit fell compared with the June quarter

On a sequential basis the picture was softer: net profit fell 17.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter from Rs 3,120 crore in the June quarter, and transaction charge revenue declined 16 per cent sequentially from Rs 3,623 crore, BusinessLine reported. Total expenditure, however, fell 51 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,161 crore from Rs 2,354 crore, because the year-ago quarter had included a one-time provision of Rs 1,297 crore towards SEBI settlement fees related to the co-location and dark fibre matters; excluding that provision, expenses would have risen 10 per cent, management said on the post-earnings call.

On a standalone basis, NSE's profit after tax grew 16 per cent to Rs 2,164 crore, while total income rose 8 per cent to Rs 3,956 crore. For the first half of FY27, consolidated total income rose 9 per cent to Rs 9,807 crore and net profit rose 13 per cent to Rs 5,698 crore, Upstox reported. The exchange said it contributed Rs 41,234 crore to the exchequer during April-September FY27, including Rs 34,788 crore of securities transaction tax and commodity transaction tax.

Alongside the results, NSE's board approved the divestment of up to 40 per cent of its stake in its wholly owned subsidiary National Coal Exchange of India Limited through a secondary sale in one or more tranches, Upstox reported. Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan described Q2 FY27 as a momentous quarter, citing the completion of the listing of one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced market infrastructure institutions. The exchange also said it had added close to 800 full rack equivalents for co-location since January 2025, taking the total to around 1,870 racks, and that there were no current plans to move weekly expiries to fortnightly or monthly contracts.
