NEW DELHI: The Centre has approved 45 new rural road projects for Mizoram covering 509.54 kilometres, at an estimated investment of Rs 710.40 crore, the Ministry of Rural Development said in a release issued through the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on October 31. The projects have been sanctioned under Batch-I of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV (PMGSY-IV) for the financial year 2026-27.

The ministry said the new roads will give all-weather connectivity for the first time to 48 previously unconnected habitations across the hill state. For villages that are cut off or face long detours in the monsoon, a paved all-weather link is the difference between reaching a hospital, a school or a market in an hour and not reaching it at all.

The approval takes Mizoram's cumulative PMGSY tally to 367 road projects covering about 4,935 kilometres, along with seven bridges, at a combined sanctioned cost of about Rs 3,412 crore, the ministry said. The figures were reported independently in a second account of the same ministry announcement.

PMGSY, launched in 2000, is the Centre's flagship programme for all-weather rural road connectivity, and its fourth phase, PMGSY-IV, covers 2024-25 to 2028-29 and targets the remaining eligible unconnected habitations. The ministry said the Mizoram projects are expected to improve access to schools, healthcare facilities, hospitals and rural markets, and to support local livelihoods as part of the government's Viksit Bharat vision.

What happens next

Sanction is the first step. The projects now move to tendering and construction by the state; timelines for individual roads will be known as work orders are issued.

No district-wise break-up of the 45 roads was given in the announcement. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when the state publishes the project list and tender schedule.
