Indian Railways has expanded its existing wagon procurement contracts by 24.57 per cent, placing additional orders for 9,638 wagons across five suppliers, officials said. The Railway Board's incremental orders are worth about Rs 3,925.41 crore — yaani about Rs 39.25 billion — in a boost to freight-equipment manufacturers.

"The increase comes through a 30% option clause in the existing contracts. The top-up takes the contracted quantity across seven contracts to 48,864 wagons," a senior official told The Economic Times. Metro Rail News carried the same headline figure on Tuesday: 9,638 wagons worth Rs 3,925.41 crore added to existing contracts.

Who supplies what
Titagarh Wagons will supply an additional 4,955 wagons worth Rs 2,025.95 crore, taking its contracted quantity to 21,804. Jupiter Wagons will supply 2,583 additional wagons worth Rs 1,050.55 crore across two contracts, taking its total to 13,005.
Texmaco Rail & Engineering will supply 1,020 more wagons worth Rs 412.32 crore, taking its tally to 4,420. Besco will add 720 wagons worth Rs 291.05 crore across two contracts, taking its total to 3,120, and Oriental Foundry will supply another 360 wagons worth Rs 145.53 crore, taking its total to 1,560.
The Titagarh tranche is independently confirmed by the company's own exchange disclosure: Titagarh Rail Systems told the stock exchanges on October 28 that the Ministry of Railways had exercised the option clause for 4,955 additional BOXNHL wagons at Rs 1,716.90 crore plus GST — a figure that matches the roughly Rs 2,026 crore tax-inclusive value in the Economic Times report — with delivery due by June 7, 2027.
All of the additional orders are for open wagons meant for bulk commodities, the report said. They are to be supplied by June 2027, as the Railways gears up for another year of record freight loading, amid a broader push to move more freight by rail.
