New Delhi: Growing geopolitical tensions, the increasing use of artificial intelligence and risks emerging from non-bank financial institutions have raised fresh concerns over global financial stability, policymakers and experts said on Tuesday during the second day of the Reserve Bank of India's two-day SAMVAD 2026 seminar in New Delhi, ANI reported, citing a series of posts shared by the RBI on X.
Setting the context for the panel discussion on financial stability, RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta observed that financial stability has become a policy objective in its own right, with the focus shifting from individual financial institutions to the broader financial system, including non-banking entities, IANS reported.
Panellists including IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth, Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan Governor Yangchen Tshogyel, Athanasios Vamvakidis of the IMF and Paul Jackson of Invesco noted that there was a need to stay alert as crises were now coming quicker and were more intense, IANS reported. They said risks from climate change, financial technology companies, the increasing use of AI agents and geopolitical fragmentation must be adequately factored in, along with gaps in data sharing.
Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, now Principal Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister, also cautioned against emerging financial vulnerabilities linked to artificial intelligence. He warned that untested AI valuations and uncertainty over profitability could increase financial vulnerabilities, and that prolonged conflicts and growing global fragmentation were tightening financial conditions and increasing sovereign debt stress, while calling for stronger financial institutions, adequate buffers and improved regulatory supervision, ANI reported.
Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Anuradha Thakur, in a special address on financial stability, highlighted India's relatively strong position amid global uncertainty. 'India faces the present challenging global scenario from a position of macroeconomic stability,' she said, adding that India's fiscal trajectory has been credible and its flexible inflation targeting has anchored inflationary expectations, IANS reported.
SAMVAD 2026, an international seminar for central banks, was inaugurated on Monday by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivering the keynote address.
