The Indian rupee extended its rally on Wednesday, October 21, opening about 14 paise higher at 94.79 against the US dollar after closing at around 94.92-94.93 in the previous session, Moneycontrol reported. The rise marked the currency's eighth consecutive session of gains; the rupee had strengthened by around 2 per cent last week (yaani about two rupees in every hundred), its strongest weekly performance in seven months.

Traders said the main support came from expected dollar inflows linked to the Jio Platforms initial public offering, which opened for retail and high-net-worth investors on Wednesday after its anchor portion drew bids of more than 30 times the shares on offer, Reuters reported via The Hindu BusinessLine. A softer dollar index, around 101.76-101.78 in early trade, and continued dollar sales by the Reserve Bank of India around the 95-per-dollar level also helped the currency, traders said.

Gains were capped, however, by crude oil prices back above $110 a barrel, which lift India's import bill and keep up dollar demand from oil companies. "The rupee is getting some support from the expected inflows related to the Jio IPO and the lower dollar index. However, oil companies' dollar demand and elevated crude oil prices will continue to weigh on the domestic currency," a forex trader at a private-sector bank told Moneycontrol. Traders said the rupee has repeatedly struggled to break past the 94.70 level, and whether IPO inflows provide that push remains the key question for the session.
