Stake-sale gain and lower provisions helped
The quarter included an exceptional gain of Rs 7,288 crore, higher than the Rs 4,593 crore reported in the year-ago quarter. BusinessLine reported the gain came from the sale of shares in SBI Funds Management, NSE and ARCIL, while DSIJ reported a pre-tax exceptional profit of Rs 7,288.47 crore from SBI's divestment of a 6.30 per cent stake in SBI Funds Management through a pre-IPO transaction and offer for sale.

Asset quality improved: gross non-performing assets stood at 1.39 per cent of gross advances at the end of September 2026, against 1.73 per cent a year earlier, BusinessLine reported. Reuters, via TradingView, also attributed the profit rise to robust loan demand alongside the stake-sale gains.

SBI is India's largest lender by assets, so its quarterly numbers are watched as a broad read on credit demand, deposit costs and bad-loan trends across the banking system.
