The Supreme Court on Friday refused to extend the re-verification deadline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Keralam, but made clear that the completion of the SIR does not freeze the voter list: names that were deleted or left out can still be added back through the normal correction process, which the court described as a continuing one. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the SIR in Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, The Hindu reported.

The plea for more time was moved by CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan through advocate G. Prakash, who told the court that more than 24 lakh names had been excluded in the Keralam SIR and that many of those voters had been unable to file their complaints before the verification window closed on Friday. The Keralam government backed the demand for an extension. The figure of 24 lakh exclusions is the petitioners' claim; the court made no finding on it.

The Election Commission argued that the SIR in Keralam had been completed in February and that the revised rolls had already been used in the subsequent assembly elections, so the petitions had become irrelevant. Senior advocate D.S. Naidu, appearing for the Commission, told the bench that the revision exercise was complete and that voters could apply for inclusion even after the SIR — names can be added to the roll until the last date for filing nominations in an election.
Instead of extending the deadline, the court kept the remedy open: petitioners may identify people who missed the enumeration deadline and send their details to the Election Commission through written representations, the Commission must examine those cases and place a report before the court, and the Keralam petitions will remain pending until the grievances are addressed. The bench also gave the Commission four weeks to respond to the petition and to a note by senior advocate Raju Ramachandran alleging large-scale deletions in Keralam, Law Trend reported.

What is solid
- The Supreme Court refused to extend the Keralam SIR re-verification deadline on October 30
- The bench said roll correction is a continuing process and the list is not frozen by the SIR's completion
- The Election Commission must examine representations from left-out voters, report back to the court, and respond within four weeks
What is only claimed
- The claim that more than 24 lakh names were excluded in Keralam — advanced by the petitioners, not established by the court or confirmed by the Election Commission
What happens next: the Election Commission's report and its response to the deletion allegations will decide whether the court orders any wider corrective exercise in Keralam. For voters anywhere in India whose names are missing, the court's reasoning is the practical takeaway — the end of an SIR round does not end the right to seek inclusion, and applications can be filed until nominations close for the next election.
