IT stocks and costly crude weighed on sentiment
Selling in information technology stocks was the main drag on the large-cap indices, market reports said. During afternoon trade, Larsen & Toubro was among the top gainers, rising about 3.94 per cent, while Infosys was the biggest loser, falling about 4.43 per cent, according to a DSij market update. Brent crude rose about 1.36 per cent to around $115.40 a barrel amid fresh concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East after an attack on a Saudi Arabian refinery — a worry for India, which depends heavily on imported oil.
Investors also stayed cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement scheduled for October 28, whose commentary on inflation and interest rates could influence foreign investment flows into Indian equities. At its intraday low, the Sensex had fallen as much as 995 points to around 72,603 in morning trade before recovering part of the loss by the close.
Broader market held up better
Smaller stocks resisted the fall. The Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.90 per cent and the Nifty Midcap 100 advanced 0.43 per cent, while the Nifty Bank index rose 0.54 per cent to 54,267.40, according to market data published at the close. In the currency market, the rupee fell 15 paise to close at 95.22 (provisional) against the US dollar, PTI reported.
Traders said the next triggers for the market are the Federal Reserve's decision and the ongoing September-quarter corporate results season. (Sources: MarketsMojo, DSij, Bajaj Finserv market data, PTI via Daily World.)
