Mumbai: India's benchmark indices staged a strong opening rebound on Wednesday, October 21, as trading resumed after Tuesday's Dussehra holiday. The BSE Sensex jumped over 600 points in opening trade and the NSE Nifty 50 soared past the 23,000 mark, The Times of India reported in its stock market live updates published on Wednesday morning.

The recovery followed a weak close on Monday, when the Sensex had fallen 876.37 points, or 1.17 per cent, to 73,852.90 and the Nifty had dropped 257.20 points, or 1.11 per cent, to 22,888.95, amid losses in private-sector lenders HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, Livemint reported. Markets were closed on Tuesday, October 20, for Dussehra. Before the opening bell, GIFT Nifty futures were trading above 23,000 — around 23,018 to 23,031 in early deals — pointing to a gap-up start, Livemint and Upstox reported.

Global cues supported the opening. Asian markets traded higher on Wednesday after gains on Wall Street and strong early corporate earnings, news agency Reuters reported via Upstox: Japan's Nikkei rose 1.23 per cent, Taiwan's benchmark gained 1.8 per cent and South Korea's Kospi surged 3.76 per cent, while China's Shanghai Composite eased 0.17 per cent. Overnight in the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 1.02 per cent and the S&P 500 gained 0.28 per cent, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.02 per cent.

Investors will watch whether the opening gains hold through the session. On Monday, foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 1,148.64 crore while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth about Rs 3,201 crore, according to NSE data reported by Upstox. At least 40 companies are scheduled to declare their September-quarter results on Wednesday, including Zomato-operator Eternal, Adani Green Energy, Indian Hotels Company, SRF, Vishal Mega Mart, KEI Industries and Mahindra and Mahindra Financial Services, Upstox said. Elevated crude oil prices and pressure on banking stocks remain the main concerns for sentiment, analysts cited by Livemint and The Times of India said.
