For 19-year-old Anmol Kharb, the semi-final capped a breakthrough week: she reached the last four with upset wins over seeded players, including third seed Line Christophersen, and beat sixth seed Unnati Hooda in an all-Indian quarter-final. The all-Indian semi-final had guaranteed India a player in the Hylo Open final before a shuttle was hit.

India's interest in Saarbrücken does not end with Sindhu: Lakshya Sen was due to play France's Toma Junior Popov in the men's singles semi-final later on Saturday, after recovering from a game down to beat Finland's Kalle Koljonen in the quarter-finals.
