Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar etched his name into Indian cricket history on Monday, scoring an unbeaten 400 against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate Group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima — only the second quadruple century in the tournament's history.
The 29-year-old faced 517 balls, hitting 46 fours and seven sixes, as Mizoram declared at 581 for 9. Sutar alone scored 68.8 per cent of his team's total.
He now stands behind only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who made an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948, and he passed Prithvi Shaw's 379 from 2023 to become the second-highest scorer in Ranji Trophy history.
Sutar shared a 168-run fifth-wicket stand with Jehu Anderson (69), and when Mizoram slipped to nine wickets down, an unbroken 189-run last-wicket partnership with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak (14 off 76 balls) carried him from 231 to the 400 mark.
Remarkably, this was only Sutar's second first-class match — he scored 99 on debut against Manipur earlier this month — making his 400 the first quadruple century ever scored as a batter's maiden first-class hundred.
The Mumbai-born batter, who moved to Mizoram this season, also becomes only the tenth player in first-class cricket history to reach 400.
