Mumbai: The accused in the firing incident involving actor Tiger Shroff had arrived in Mumbai about a month before the attack and allegedly conducted a recce of the homes of several prominent Bollywood celebrities, IANS reported on Wednesday, citing Mumbai Crime Branch sources.

According to police sources quoted by IANS, the accused would hire auto-rickshaws to travel around Mumbai and ask the drivers to take them to the residences of Bollywood stars, allegedly claiming they wanted to photograph the homes. Different drivers took them to the residences of several actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, the report said. Police sources said the accused had been instructed to target celebrities who had relatively limited security.

During the recce, an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly told them that Tiger Shroff played football at a ground in Juhu every Sunday. The accused visited the ground on October 11, but Shroff did not turn up that day, IANS reported. They returned the following Sunday, October 18, this time carrying weapons, and allegedly opened fire at Shroff's car. Police sources said some other individuals from Haryana had also travelled to Mumbai around the same time, allegedly conducted reconnaissance and returned to Haryana. The accused allegedly discarded both weapons at an unidentified location while fleeing Mumbai after the attack, and the Mumbai Police are trying to trace and recover the firearms — two pistols, one foreign-made and one domestically manufactured, according to the report. The Crime Branch is investigating the roles of the accused and the alleged conspiracy.

Separately, PTI reported that the three key accused in the case were brought to Mumbai from Kota in Rajasthan by road early on Wednesday. On arrival they were taken to GT Hospital for a mandatory medical examination and then to the Mumbai Crime Branch's Anti-Extortion Cell office for interrogation, an official told PTI. Police identified the three as Rehan alias Sukka, from Sonipat in Haryana; Ritik Kurmi alias Roshan, originally from Begusarai in Bihar and living in Mumbai; and Phool Singh, from Haryana. The Kota city police had handed them over to the Mumbai Police, which formally arrested them; a court in Kota had granted transit remand to take them to Mumbai.

According to the Mumbai Police account reported by PTI, at least two men fired five to six rounds at Shroff's car in the Juhu area on Sunday evening before speeding away on a motorcycle. The actor escaped relatively unhurt, while his driver and a bystander were injured. The motorcycle allegedly used by the shooters was found abandoned in Andheri. Police say the accused fled to Surat, boarded a Jaipur-bound train from there, and were supposed to go on to Delhi by bus and then flee to Nepal. A case has been registered under provisions for attempt to murder and the Arms Act. Police have also said Rehan was in touch with Anil Pandit, described as an alleged associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which claimed responsibility for the attack in an unverified social media post.

ANI reported that defence counsel Ajinkya Mirgal, who says he will represent the accused, confirmed the three were taken to the Anti-Extortion Cell for questioning and would be produced before a court. ANI also reported the Crime Branch's position that the shooters were initially targeting another prominent Bollywood celebrity but could not reach that person because of tight security, and then turned to Shroff; the other celebrity was not named. All of the police accounts above are allegations under investigation, and the accused have not been convicted of any offence.
