AGARTALA, Tripura — Three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were injured on Monday morning, November 2, in a clash at Ashabari, in the Boxanagar area of Tripura's Sepahijala district, close to the India-Bangladesh border. The incident triggered tension in the locality and has drawn a strong reaction from Chief Minister Manik Saha, who condemned the assault and directed the authorities to take swift and stringent action.

According to the account reported by news agency ANI, the three jawans were assaulted by a group of alleged smugglers. The attackers reportedly also attempted to snatch firearms from the injured personnel and vandalised a government vehicle.

A second account from the ground

Local reporting from Ashabari gives a different sequence of events. According to residents cited by Abotani TV, BSF personnel detained a local man, Hefzur Rahman, on suspicion while he was working near New Bazar Road, next to the Ashabari Gram Panchayat. Villagers allege that he was assaulted during the detention and suffered a fractured leg — an allegation that has not been established by any investigation so far. Both sides have lodged complaints at the police station.

Angry residents then blocked the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near New Bazar. When a vehicle carrying three personnel of the 49th BSF Battalion — Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar and jawan Manjit — passed through from Rahimpur towards Boxanagar, protesters reportedly surrounded it and attacked the personnel with sticks and bamboo, leaving all three injured, Abotani TV reported.

The injured personnel were first taken to Boxanagar Hospital and later referred to hospitals in Agartala. Personnel from the Ashabari BSF border outpost and Kalamchaura police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Police and senior BSF officials have begun an inquiry, and the circumstances leading to the clash remain under investigation.

Chief Minister condemns the assault

In a post on X, Chief Minister Manik Saha said: "I strongly condemn the brutal assault on our brave BSF personnel at Ashabari by a group of miscreants. Such acts of violence against our security forces are completely unacceptable and deserve unequivocal condemnation. Any attack on our security personnel is a matter of grave concern and must be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law." He added: "Concerned authorities are directed to take swift and stringent action against those responsible and ensure that justice is delivered. Our security personnel deserve the utmost respect and protection."

What is solid

  • Three BSF personnel of the 49th Battalion were injured in the Ashabari clash on Monday morning and were treated first at Boxanagar Hospital before referral to Agartala.
  • Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the assault in a post on X and directed swift and stringent action.
  • Police and senior BSF officials have begun an inquiry; both sides have lodged complaints.

What is only claimed

  • Whether the attackers were smugglers, as the ANI-reported account states, or local residents protesting a detention, as villagers say.
  • The villagers' allegation that the detained man, Hefzur Rahman, was assaulted in custody and suffered a fractured leg.
  • The reported attempt to snatch firearms from the injured personnel and the vandalising of a government vehicle.

What happens next will depend on the inquiry's findings. The two accounts — an attack on personnel on border duty, and a protest that escalated after an alleged assault in detention — point to very different remedies, and investigators will have to establish, with evidence, what happened both at the detention and at the blockade.
