Vikram Solar Limited has said its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park, Gangaikondan, in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, is on track to produce its first cells in December 2026, with the full 9 GW capacity to be commissioned in phases thereafter.

The update, carried in the company's Regulation 30 filing and reported on Friday morning, was also noted in The Hindu BusinessLine's live market coverage, which said the facility will supply high-efficiency cells for most of the company's module production and reduce dependence on imported cells.

A 200-acre integrated campus

The facility is being developed through the company's wholly owned subsidiary, VSL Green Power Private Limited, on a nearly 200-acre integrated campus, where a 6 GW module plant was inaugurated in August 2026. The company said co-location shortens supply cycles, tightens quality control and lowers logistics costs, and that the campus supports about 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.

"Indian module makers, including us, have built their businesses around imported cells. Gangaikondan ends that for Vikram Solar," Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary said, according to the company update reported by EquityBulls and Kalkine. "Cells are where the value, the technology and the risk in a module sit, and in December we start making them here."

Roadmap to wafers, and a 12 GW expansion

The cell plant is the second phase of a three-stage integration plan. A planned expansion would take cell capacity to 12 GW, and a third phase — a 9 GW ingot and wafer facility — is board-approved and targeted for FY29, Kalkine reported from the same filing.

Once operational, domestically produced cells are intended to serve programmes with domestic content requirements, including PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM, and global customers seeking diversified supply chains. The company said it intends to seek ALMM List-II enlistment for cells produced at Gangaikondan in due course.
