Vultr, which describes itself as the world's largest privately-held cloud infrastructure company, has announced a major expansion of its AMD-powered infrastructure for enterprise and sovereign cloud initiatives: it will deploy AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs in a new 20 MW supercluster in Chennai, creating the country's largest AMD Instinct deployment, the company said in its announcement.

The Chennai deployment will give Vultr two of the world's largest AMD AI infrastructure deployments globally, alongside its flagship supercluster in Springfield, Ohio, The Hindu BusinessLine reported. Each AMD Instinct MI355X GPU offers 288GB of HBM3E memory and 8TB/s of memory bandwidth, the performance needed to develop and deploy increasingly complex AI models at scale.

Built for India's AI builders
The Chennai supercluster is designed to serve AI labs and foundation-model builders, AI-native startups, enterprises, and research and academic institutions. It will support demanding workloads including large language model and foundation-model training, fine-tuning and high-throughput inference, and will use AMD's ROCm open software ecosystem, giving developers access to widely used AI frameworks, libraries and models.
'Enterprises deploying AI at scale need infrastructure they can access locally to meet data sovereignty, data residency, and latency requirements,' Vultr CEO J.J. Kardwell said. 'Vultr's Chennai supercluster, powered by AMD MI355X GPUs, gives organizations in India the capacity to train, fine-tune, and run inference on in-country infrastructure.' AMD India's country head and SVP engineering Jaya Jagadish said: 'India has the talent and ideas to build the next generation of AI. Access to compute at this scale will help turn more of those ideas into reality.'

Capacity: 20 MW. Chips: AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs (288GB HBM3E memory, 8TB/s bandwidth each). Users: AI labs, foundation-model builders, startups, enterprises, research and academic institutions. Software: AMD ROCm open ecosystem. Vultr says it will expand AI infrastructure further in 2027 with MI455X GPUs and the AMD Helios rack-scale architecture.
The announcement adds Chennai to the fast-growing map of large AI compute build-outs in India, where global and domestic companies are racing to add in-country capacity as demand for training and running AI models surges — and as data-sovereignty rules push organisations to keep sensitive workloads on infrastructure located inside India, Express Computer reported.
