Thrissur: Kerala Police have caught more than 10,000 people driving under the influence of alcohol during a two-day statewide enforcement drive, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said on Monday, October 19. The checks were carried out across the state, during both day and night.

The minister warned that those found driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances would face stringent legal action, including cancellation of their driving licences. Action will be initiated under the Motor Vehicles Act, he said, adding that the government would also explore measures to prevent offenders from obtaining driving licences again.

Chennithala said alcohol and intoxicating substances had been factors in recent road accidents in the state, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement. With the festive season approaching, police have been directed to intensify inspections and take firm action against impaired driving.

The minister appealed to the public to cooperate with the enforcement campaign, stressing that the measures are aimed at curbing a dangerous practice and improving road safety for motorists, passengers and pedestrians alike.
