The investigation into the alleged attack on former Kerala Health Minister Veena George by Kerala Students' Union (KSU) activists has taken a fresh turn, with a woman Sub-Inspector telling the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that the original investigating team fabricated a statement in her name, Madhyamam and IANS reported on Thursday.

Deepthi, who was the Kannur Town Sub-Inspector responsible for Veena George's security at Kannur railway station, told the SIT that the original investigators had never recorded her statement. She alleged that a false statement claiming the minister was thrown off balance during the February 25 protest on the railway platform was recorded in her name.

The original investigation had led to five KSU activists being booked under serious charges, including attempted murder. They spent several days in jail and are now out on bail. The SIT has recorded the statements of all five accused, including KSU district president M.C. Athul, reports said.

The SIT is also preparing to recommend action against Abhilash, Veena George's former gunman, to the Director General of Police. Abhilash had initially alleged that protesters tried to attack the minister with weapons, but later told the SIT he had not seen anyone attempting to attack her. According to the reports, he also claimed he gave his earlier statement at Veena George's direction — an allegation that remains unproven and is part of the ongoing probe.

The SIT is treating the retraction seriously and is expected to detail its findings in a report to the DGP. It has also decided to question the Railway Police Inspector who registered the case on the basis of the gunman's initial statement. The allegations in the case, and the counter-allegations about fabricated statements, are all yet to be established in court.
