Sajeev, along with co-accused Ninav, Joyal S Anto and Ameen Shah, had approached the sessions court after a trial court in Angamaly rejected their bail applications on October 17, according to Bar and Bench. The detailed order of the sessions court is awaited.

The October 11 crash

The case stems from a collision on October 11, when a Mini Cooper allegedly driven by Sajeev, 19, hit a scooter carrying three youngsters on the Athani-Airport road in Nedumbassery, killing all three. The Nedumbassery Airport Police Station registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, Bar and Bench reported.

Police arrested Sajeev and the three passengers who were in the car with him at the time of the collision, and all four were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, according to the report. The allegations against them have not been proved, and the case is pending before the court.

Why the prosecution opposed bail

The prosecution opposed the bail applications arguing that the investigation was at a crucial stage, Bar and Bench reported. It told the court that the results of tests that would determine whether Sajeev had consumed alcohol were awaited and that police were yet to examine the data from the car's Event Data Recorder.

The prosecution also relied on an audio message allegedly sent by one of the accused, Joyal, to a friend after the accident, in which he allegedly stated that Sajeev was driving at high speed under the influence of alcohol when the car hit the scooter, according to the report. That allegation is part of the prosecution's case and has not been established by the court.
