According to police, the attack took place at a house near the Redu Sahib gurdwara in Daba. The house owner, an acquaintance of the victim, was also assaulted when he tried to intervene, police said. The attackers severed one of Singh's hands, put it in a white polythene bag and handed it to a grocery shop owner nearby, telling him to deliver it to the victim's family, according to the report.
Singh was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police said. Ludhiana ACP Roop Deep Kaur said police have arrested the main accused, identified as Gurmit Singh. The arrest and the other allegations are part of a police investigation and have not been proven in court.

Daba SHO Jatinder Kumar said, according to the report, that Singh had been booked in 12 criminal cases in the past and that the murder could be the fallout of a long-standing feud — a police assessment, not a court finding. Police said they are scanning CCTV footage from the area to trace and arrest the remaining attackers.
