Ludhiana, October 29 — Former Congress leader Jagjot Singh was allegedly attacked by seven to eight assailants who opened fire on him in Ludhiana's Dholewal area late on Wednesday night, while his mother Manjit Kaur and his three-and-a-half-year-old son were inside his car, The North News reported.

According to Jagjot Singh, the attack took place after he had dinner with his family at the Maggi Point restaurant. He said he stepped out of his car to collect a water bottle and pay the bill when the assailants arrived and opened fire.

He alleged that the attackers fired five to six rounds, and continued firing near the car's windows as he tried to escape in the vehicle. He further claimed the assailants struck his head several times with a daatar (a sharp-edged weapon) over his turban and also hit him with a pistol butt, leaving injuries near his head and eye.

Jagjot Singh managed to drive to Ludhiana's Civil Hospital for treatment. He claimed bullet marks were visible inside the car and that an empty .45-bore cartridge case was found in the vehicle. His mother Manjit Kaur said she panicked when she saw her son rushing towards the car, and alleged the attackers fired near the vehicle and that she also sustained injuries.

Singh, who lives in Millerganj, works in the property sector and runs a non-governmental organisation, said he was formerly associated with the Congress but is not currently affiliated with any political party. He alleged the same group had attacked his residence and fired shots around a year ago, and suspected political rivalry behind the latest incident. These are his allegations and have not been established.

The incident has been reported to the concerned police station. The motive behind the alleged attack, and the identities of the alleged assailants, remain to be established through the police investigation.
