According to the account the couple's elder son, Gagandeep Singh, gave police, he was sent out of the house by his father and on returning found his mother bleeding; he alleged his father was seen leaving the house in a rush and had washed and hidden the knife. Officers said wounds to the woman's back and abdomen had severed blood vessels. These details are allegations recorded in the police complaint and remain under investigation.

Couple had recently returned from Australia, separately

Police said the couple had travelled to Australia, where their younger son lives. Kamaldeep Kaur returned to India around four months ago, while Ravinder Singh came back on October 29. Their elder son was living at the family's Ludhiana residence. In his complaint, Gagandeep Singh said he had not noticed any arguments or differences between his parents after his father returned to India.

Station house officer Gurmukh Singh said preliminary investigation indicated that suspicion over his wife's character was the alleged motive behind the killing. The allegation has not been tested in court, and police said the investigation is continuing.
