According to police officials, around 20 to 25 student protesters had gathered at Chaityabhoomi to take out an unsanctioned candlelight march. The students were protesting the alleged lack of administrative and police action in the death case of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode. Police detained the protesters, and the process of releasing them was underway, ANI reported. News18 Marathi, covering the gathering live, reported that a student organisation had called the candle march in support of Wakode and his parents and that police detained the protesters before the march could begin, with a large number of police personnel deployed in the area.

NewsX reported that the students were demanding justice for Wakode, who was found dead in his hostel on September 18, and that his family has alleged caste discrimination and harassment — allegations that remain allegations and have not been established. Awaaz Punjab is reporting the family's allegation as an allegation only.

At the nearby Shivaji Park, police took action against another unsanctioned gathering, where approximately 120 individuals had congregated for a scheduled 'Adivasi Gen Z' protest. 'At Shivaji Park, approximately 120 people who had gathered for an unauthorised Adivasi Gen Z protest scheduled for today were taken to the police station. The process of releasing them is underway,' Mumbai Police said, according to ANI.
Police described both gatherings as unauthorised. No injuries or arrests beyond the detentions were reported in the ANI report, and police said those detained at both sites were being released.
