Mumbai, October 23 — Revenue intelligence officers in Mumbai have held four people, one of them from Bangladesh, and recovered gold weighing 2.29 kg at the city's airport, in an operation that dismantled an international gold smuggling syndicate, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said. Officials said a transit flyer arriving from Dubai allegedly slipped socks holding wax capsules of gold dust to a worker at an airport shop. Two other flyers later allegedly passed him similar packets, NewsPoint reported. The account describes an alleged handover method inside the airport, in which transit passengers passed the gold to a person working at the airport instead of carrying it out themselves.

The four held are in judicial custody as the probe into the wider network continues, officials said. The Free Press Journal also reported the same operation, with four arrests and 2.29 kg of gold seized. Investigators are continuing to examine the wider network behind the alleged smuggling, and the allegations against those held remain to be tested in court.
