The Bombay High Court has asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to report on seven accidents at Metro Lines 2B, 4 and 9 construction sites between February 14 and October 17, NewsPoint reported. The court, hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Ruju Thakker, gave the authority three weeks to respond, and the next hearing is listed for November 26.
Thakker's PIL seeks a third-party safety audit of all under-construction metro line sites across Mumbai and a detailed report on the cause of the February 14 accident, Live Law reported. The plea also asks the MMRDA to explain why it has not initiated blacklisting proceedings against the contractor involved in that accident, and seeks details of the compensation paid to the family of the man who died and to those injured.
On February 14, part of a parapet slab of the under-construction Metro line at Mulund fell on a moving autorickshaw and a car on LBS Marg. Ramdhan Yadav, a farmer and sarpanch of Rambhartani village in Uttar Pradesh who was travelling in the autorickshaw, died on the spot, while the rickshaw driver and the cab driver sustained serious injuries, Live Law reported.
The most recent accident in the list, on October 17, saw a 12-tonne steel reinforcement cage meant for a pier of the under-construction Anand Nagar–Saket elevated road crash onto a moving sedan near Kopri bridge on the Eastern Express Highway in Thane, the Times of India reported. The driver told the media that he suffered minor injuries to his head and his passenger was also slightly injured, while the MMRDA said no injuries were reported. The authority imposed a Rs 2 crore penalty — yaani, a fine of two crore rupees — on the contractor and ordered a detailed investigation, the report said.
