The groom's maternal uncle told IANS the guests had eaten at around 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. but began experiencing symptoms after returning home later in the evening. "Once we reached home, by 11:00-11:30 p.m., everyone started vomiting. The bride was the first to fall ill," he said, adding that patients were still arriving at hospitals and that the number affected could rise.

In separate reporting of the same incident, a medical officer at the Mulund hospital told Aaj Tak that 27 patients had been admitted there, many with vomiting and diarrhoea and some with severe stomach pain, and that their condition was stable under observation. Guests were reported to have suspected a milk-based preparation served towards the end of the celebrations; the cause of the suspected poisoning has not been officially confirmed and an investigation is under way.

Families of those affected have demanded strict action against the caterers and food suppliers, alleging negligence in checking the quality of the food — an allegation the authorities have yet to rule on — and have sought an enquiry into the role of the committee managing the wedding venue as well as an investigation by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
