Two people died and four others were injured after a fire broke out at a scrap godown in Abdul Rashid Compound on Khairani Road in Mumbai's Saki Naka area on Tuesday evening, civic officials confirmed on Wednesday. The two bodies, which had not been identified, were recovered from an area where aerosol cans were stored and were taken to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The fire was reported at around 6.18 pm on Tuesday, October 20, and was declared a Level-2 blaze. Firefighters worked for more than six hours and brought it under control at around 12.30 am on Wednesday, according to municipal officials cited by Hindustan Times and other reports.
The four injured men are being treated at Rajawadi Hospital. They were named in reports as Taufiq Qureshi, 20, with 80 per cent burns, Jahid Qureshi, 20, and Kamal Shah, 47, each with 40 per cent burns, and Lalchand Gautam, 40, with 10 per cent burns.
Officials estimated that around 60 to 70 commercial units and chawls were affected as the fire spread from the scrap warehouse, described as covering about 16,000 square feet, into neighbouring workplaces and homes. The cause of the fire has not yet been established and an investigation is under way.
