Mumbai's three new flyovers at Sion, Vidyavihar and Goregaon East were inaugurated on Thursday, October 22, by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who presided over the ceremony online from Varsha Bungalow. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) projects are aimed at improving east-west connectivity across the city, where the north-south railway network divides the eastern and western suburbs.
The three structures are the Vidyavihar east-west connecting railway overbridge, the flyover at Sion railway station, and the flyover from Ratnagiri Junction to Santosh Nagar on Film City Road in Goregaon East, which forms part of the larger Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, according to reports of the inauguration.
The reconstructed Sion railway overbridge replaces a 112-year-old structure that had been declared unsafe. Its steel railway span measures 54.5 metres in length and 26 metres in width, and the rebuilding was also needed for Central Railway's proposed fifth and sixth lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase II. The railway portion was rebuilt by Central Railway, while the BMC strengthened the approach roads.
The 650-metre Vidyavihar flyover connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg on the eastern side of the station with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg on the western side, including a 100-metre bridge over the railway tracks. The BMC expects it to reduce travel time between the two sides from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes.
The third project is a 1.26-km, six-lane flyover at Ratnagiri Hotel junction on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road in Goregaon East. The GMLR is intended to create a direct corridor between Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs and ease pressure on the Western and Eastern Express Highways, though the full corridor remains partially complete, with remaining sections still under construction or in planning.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, ministers Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Ashish Shelar, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi attended the inauguration along with senior civic officials, according to reports. The original opening date for the three projects was October 15, but the inauguration was postponed to October 22.
