Pune: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized about 1,190 kg of laddus and raw materials worth Rs 1.73 lakh (yaani about Rs 173,000) from a sweet-making unit in Kondhwa, Pune, after detecting excessive food colouring and unhygienic conditions, officials said.

The officials acted on a tip-off during the festive season, when demand for laddus and other sweets peaks ahead of Deepavali. Samples of boondi and laddus were collected from the unit for testing.

The seizure is part of the FDA's intensified festive-season food safety checks in Pune, in which inspectors have been examining sweet shops and producers for excessive artificial colours, substandard ingredients and hygiene violations, with warnings of action against violators.

Further action in the Kondhwa case is underway, the FDA said.
