As Awaaz Punjab reported earlier on Monday, Puri, a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector, was part of an operation in which more than five police teams from Khategaon, Kannod, Satwas and Nemawar were formed after information that a truck was allegedly transporting liquor illegally from Harda towards Gujarat via Indore. The teams tracked the truck and erected barricades at different locations. When Puri approached the driver, who had stopped on the Harda-Nemawar highway to drink water, and asked him to get down, the driver allegedly attempted to flee; Puri fell and the truck's rear wheel ran over him, killing him on the spot. After the postmortem, his body was kept at Khategaon police station, where residents and police personnel paid their respects as he was accorded a guard of honour.

CM orders impartial probe; minister's allegation against Congress

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over Puri's death and issued instructions to ensure an impartial investigation and strict action, ANI reported. He also announced Rs 1 crore financial assistance to the bereaved family and directed that Puri's wife be given a compassionate appointment to the post of Sub-Inspector. State minister Vishwas Sarang alleged that Rahul Jaiswal, described as the Congress in-charge for the Khategaon Assembly constituency, and his brother Manish Jaiswal were involved in the matter and are partners in a liquor shop in Timarni, and alleged that the Congress was running the liquor business in the state to fund its party office — allegations the Congress has not been reported to have answered in these reports. The Congress had earlier alleged, after Puri's killing, that the incident showed a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state.
