A total of 343 voter identity cards were found along the banks of the Narmada River in Mandleshwar town of Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district on Sunday, news agency PTI reported. Preliminary information suggests that the cards belong to voters in the Rau assembly constituency of neighbouring Indore district.

The cards were found during a cleanliness drive along the riverbank by members of the Niswarth Seva Samiti. After spotting a large number of cards, they immediately informed the administration, and a video showing the recovered cards later went viral on social media.

Upon receiving the information, a revenue team led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) arrived at the scene and seized all the cards. Mandleshwar Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Shweta Shukla told PTI that the voter ID cards were found during the cleanliness drive along the Narmada and that the police have been directed to investigate the matter.

The recovery triggered a political reaction in the district. Congress representatives demonstrated outside the Mandleshwar police station demanding that a First Information Report be filed and a criminal investigation opened into how the cards reached the riverbank, and party leaders cited the number of recovered cards while raising questions about possible electoral irregularities. These are the party's allegations; officials have said the documents have been secured as evidence while the inquiry continues.
