New Delhi: The Congress high command on Saturday, October 31, held a strategy meeting with its Punjab leadership at the party headquarters, Indira Bhawan, in New Delhi, as the party tries to present a united front for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, ANI and The Unmute English reported.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi led the deliberations, with AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also present. Both reports name Punjab leaders Partap Singh Bajwa, Charanjit Singh Channi and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring among those who took part. The Unmute also named Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot and state unit chief Pargat Singh as attendees, while ANI additionally named Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Vijay Inder Singla.
According to The Unmute, the meeting reviewed preparations for the party's 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur on November 4 and mapped out the political roadmap for the 2027 Assembly elections, with a focus on grassroots mobilisation. Party leaders declared that the campaign will move forward under a unified collective leadership — in other words, still no single chief-ministerial face. The report paraphrased Kharge as saying that citizens are seeking a decisive political alternative and that the party remains dedicated to restoring peace, social stability and economic growth in the state, and Venugopal as saying the organisational framework for the Assembly contest has been finalised under the high command's guidance. These are the party's own claims, not independently verified outcomes.
ANI framed the same meeting differently: as deliberations held to address factionalism in the state unit ahead of the 2027 elections. The two framings sit side by side — the party publicly projecting unity and collective leadership, while the wire report says the Delhi leadership sat with the state leaders precisely because of the factional problem. The state unit changed hands only weeks ago: Pargat Singh took over as Punjab Congress president in early October after Warring resigned following months of internal differences, and Pilot had earlier said the party would fight 2027 collectively rather than projecting one face — a position the site has already reported.
The timing underlines the gap Congress has to close. On the same day as the Delhi meeting, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party announced its first list of 40 candidates for 2027, becoming the first major party to name candidates, while Congress's meeting produced no list, no seat decisions and no campaign announcement beyond the November 4 Sangrur rally. The 117-member Punjab Assembly's term ends on March 16, 2027, and the Election Commission has not yet announced the poll schedule, though its delegation reviewed district-wise poll preparedness in the state earlier this week. Whether Saturday's show of unity holds will be tested first at Sangrur — and then by how the party handles its own candidate selection.
